{ the state of my heart }

fig. the state of my heart is a mixed-media installation that encapsulates two decades of emotions within a canvas. It presents a human heart through three facets of time: present, patience, and persistence. It's a recurring wail for recovery, and acceptance of circumstances while beating through memoirs of the past.

when younger, I considered drawing a human heart a feat. our biology teacher awarded us 5 marks for making and labelling it perfectly. but drawing a heart–unlike other parts of the body–never just felt technical. I perceived drawing it as an intimately retrospective experience.

disregarding the 5 marks now, the figure “the state of my heart” earnestly reflects the organ that feels more than functions to keep me alive. no heart is completely broken or intact. mine accumulates two decades of emotions: pain, love and everything unnamed in between. I’m alive for having felt them and I’m living to continue feeling them.

my biology teacher will be disappointed to see me labelling my heart in terms of facets of time but that’s how I associate it to be now.

the unrepairable: present

the untended: patience

 the unconditional: persistence
